Jim Horn, P.E.

President / Principal


Jim has a long-standing interest in energy-efficiency and sustainable building design. He is a LEED Accredited Professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and served for many years as a director of the Northern California Solar Energy Association.

As a young mechanical engineer for San Francisco's H. K. Ferguson Company in the early 1980's, Jim helped design several major aerospace defense installations, including Rockwell's B-1 bomber assembly and test facility in Palmdale and Northrop's B-2 "Stealth" bomber research facility in Pico Rivera. Major manufacturing projects at Ferguson included a new semiconductor fabrication plant for National Semiconductor Corporation and new production facilities for Xerox and Frito-Lay.

Since starting his own firm in 1986, Jim has engineered a wide variety of educational, commercial and institutional projects (see "Our Projects") for many of northern California's premier architectural firms (see "Our Clients").

Community Involvement

  • Jim was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Gravenstein Union School District in November 2002. (www.grav.k12.ca.us) and has been selected president twice by his colleagues

  • Jim and his wife Susan were named Sonoma County's "Volunteers of the Year" by the Sonoma County School Trustees Association for the year 2000. They were honored for their work with the Gravenstein Union School District, located between Sebastopol and Cotati. Susan was president of the Middle School Boosters, while Jim served as vice-president of the Gravenstein PTA, editor of the PTA newsletter and president of the Gravenstein Schools Foundation, a non-profit corporation formed to aid Gravenstein schools (www.gravenstein-schools.org). Both Jim and Susan volunteered as tutors in the "Read-to-Me" program sponsored by local Rotary clubs.
